Made for the Digital-Wings-Art Culture Contest

I live in the low country of coastal South Carolina. When we first moved here and drove around, we found some of the most interesting places. First of all, around the corner from us was a Gullah Museum. There are booths set up down Hwy 17 from here to Charleston and they feature hand made wares such as sweetgrass baskets, drums, and cane poles, just to name a few. After inquiring about all this, we found we lived among a the Gullah or Geechee community. These are people that have kept traditions alive from Africa to the popular southern ports in South Carolina and Georgia. There is a heritage that is passed down from generation to generation. If you listen to them talk, you can barely understand, even though they are speaking English. The language is a hybrid called Geechee. You can find out more about these awesome people and their traditions at Know It All

Thank you to the amazing aisha5 from Kiara Photography for allowing me to use this outstanding photograph. It is NOT stock, but I have written permission to use. When I first saw African Lady, I was completely mesmerized by the color, the beauty of her face paint, and I was intrigued to know more about it. I googled some information about African festivals, and some of the links brought me right back to our local communities, and that is what I've presented here today.
